Electrocoagulation
Electrocoagulation is also known as Radio Frequency Diathermy (The therapeutic generation of local heat in body tissues by high-frequency electromagnetic currents) or Short Wave Electrolysis. A fine wire probe is used to transmit radio waves to tissues near the probe. Molecules within the tissue are caused to vibrate which lead to a rapid increase of the temperature, causing coagulation (to change or be changed from a liquid into a thickened mass: egg white coagulating when heated; blood clotting over the wound) of the proteins within the follicle, effectively killing the follicle.

I come from a hairy background and there is no question about that! I was struggling with excessive hair all over my body. In the early 60’s until the late 90’s. The only methods known and accepted for temporary hair removal were shaving, tweezing, chemical depilatories, and waxing. The solution, however, for permanent hair removal on the face is currently electrolysis. The current technology for laser hair removal makes it a bit easier for women in today's time; that's only if the laser works on all body parts!!!
Many of my clients are struggling with excess and coarse hair on their chins, upper lips, necks, sideburns, noses, and foreheads. I constantly struggled with a hairy upper lip and sideburn, no matter how many times I waxed. The hair would always return within 2-3 weeks. Because of this, I left my comfort zone and tried laser hair removal so that I could possibly offer the service to my clients. I joined the American laser center in Dallas and paid a great deal of money for the service.
VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT LASER HAIR REDUCTION
Although complications from lasers such as blister formation, erosion, and post-inflammatory hypo- and hyperpigmentation are common side effects, I took a chance and underwent treatments. After a year and a half, the hair on my upper lip and sideburns are still present with very little improvement. Moreover, the amount of hair on my chin has increased! The time and money that invested in this treatment was not worth the trouble it caused. Not to mention, I also had to shave certain areas of my face, something that I have NEVER done and will NEVER do again.

I finally tried electrolysis, one of the oldest methods for permanent hair removal. I underwent 2-3 treatments on my upper lip and began seeing improvements. It was a great service, therefore I decided to learn and master the technique so that I could offer it to my clients.

To understand how electrolysis works, you first need to understand how the human hair works. Human hair is so complex that it is difficult for man to fully understand it.
Hair types
Nearly all the skin of the human body, except for the palms of the hands and soles of feet, is covered with hair. We are born with all the hair follicles we are ever going to have, and these follicles normally continue to produce hairs throughout our lives. Following are a few hair types:
Secondary hairs: The stiff, short, bristly hair of the eyelashes and brows, and can also be found inside the nose. The function of secondary hair is protection. For the eyelashes, to prevent foreign objects from entering the eye. Eyebrows serve to divert liquids (sweat) from the eyes
and communication gestures.
Vellus hairs: Also called "fuzz." They are short, fine, light colored or colorless, and barely noticeable found on children and adults. The growth of vellus hair is not affected by hormones
Terminal hairs: Thick, coarse, long, and dark compared to vellus hair. During puberty, the increase in androgenic hormone levels causes vellus hair to be replaced with terminal hair in certain parts of the human body. The human body, including the face, will have different levels of sensitivity to the male hormone, androgen.

The hair grows in a cyclic manner. A relatively long period of growth (that varies with the type and location of the hair) is followed by a short period of rest after which the hair is released from the follicle, and a new growth cycle begins forming a new hair
Thus the length of the growth cycle determines the length of the hair. Right? Hair grows about
3 mm per day (about three tenths the thickness of a dime). Within a year, our scalp and beard on men can produce nearly five inches (13 cm). By comparison, the longest hairs on our arms have a growth cycle of less than two months.
If hair grew longer and longer without being released from the follicle, on the arms or legs for instance, it would be disastrous for people that don’t ever shave or wax. Can you imagine, for example, a man dragging a couple feet of hair on his arms? The Lord thinks of everything!
The follicle is also highly mitotic (cell division) and most capable of regeneration. Indeed, we were "designed" so that if hairs were torn out, they would quickly grow back. That is why all active elements of the follicle must be dismantled to cause permanent hair removal

Everyone's hair grows differently, depending on age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, pregnancy, and other factors. But all hair goes through three distinct growth phases.
The Growth of Human Hair - Three phases
Hair shedding Cycle
Hair grows from tube-like depressions in the skin called hair follicles. The hair shaft is formed from living cells deep in the follicle. These fragile living cells subsequently die to form the remarkably strong fiber we call a hair. The same follicle is capable of producing more than one type of hair during the course of our lives.
Anagen phase - The growing phase
Hair grows from the bottom of the follicle at a rate of 3 tenths the thickness of a dime per day.
(Growth cycle called the anagen phase), which lasts from few months up to several years. At any given time, the majority (85%) of our body hair is in this phase. During anagen, the hair has an abundance of melanin and grown in to a terminal hair. In this phase both laser hair removal and electrloysis is to be beneficial.

Catagen phase - The transitional phase
Begins when the hair detaches itself from the dermal papilla and for a short period of time receives nourishment from surrounding capillaries, which lasts about 2 weeks, during which the hair stops growing but is not yet shed. About 3 - 4% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time.
Hair grows to a certain length specific to each follicle then stops growing for a short period of time

Telogen phase - The resting phase
Lasts 5 - 6 weeks, at the end of which the hair falls out and a new hair begins to form. Approximately 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any one time.
When growth begins again in the hair follicle, the resting hair is released from the follicle and a new hair is produced.
These hairs fall out daily through combing, brushing and simple friction.
The time from the anagen to the telogen stages varies depending on the area of the body and the genetic patterns of the person. Sometimes an early anagen hair like the case showing here, will begin to grow before the telogen hair has fallen out. It only the telogen hair is treated with electrolysis in this phase and regrowth will occur.

Facial Hirsutism in Women
A. Hirsutism is a condition in which too much hair grows on the face or body (changing from
vellus hair to terminal hair) as compared to what might be average for a person’s age and
ethnicity. Hirsutism-excessive terminal hair can be caused by abnormally high levels of
male sex hormones called androgens (primarily testosterone and its derivatives).

Q. Which is a better method for hair removal of coarse facial hair, electrolysis or
laser hair removal?
A. Electrolysis is the best method for all coarse facial hair color. If you're interested in
permanent facial hair removal, you need to understand first how each method works. If you
have red, blond, gray, very light brown hair all over your body, laser hair removal will not
work beside I had increased hair on my chin (mild hypertrichosis) due to exposure to laser
treatment.
Please read the following and you will understand why I prefer electrolysis over
laser when treating facial hair. I am going to explain it with the easiest way possible
This is how it is done!
The Greek translation of electrolysis is "to break up by electricity." So electrolysis procedure works by destroying the roots and the follicle of unwanted hairs with an electric current. The end result is that the unwanted hairs do not grow back.
the most common types of electrolysis are the Galvanic, thermolysis, and blend methods.

Galvanic electrolysis involves sending a DC current of electricity directly to the root of an unwanted hair via a needle that is inserted into the follicle of the affected hair. As the DC current travels through the follicle, a chemical reaction occurs. This chemical reaction produces sodium hydroxide (lye) which is capable of burning, corroding, dissolving, or eating away by chemical action, which destroys the hair follicle itself.
A. A needle is again inserted into the follicle of an unwanted hair. However, the electrical current that is sent through the needle is an AC (alternate current) current with thermolysis. Unwanted hair destruction does not result from a chemical reaction with thermolysis. Instead, as the AC current passes through the needle, the resulting vibration heats the water molecules surrounding the hair follicles. The resulting heat damages the hair follicle, ideally preventing future hair growth.
A. Blend electrolysis consolidates both the Galvanic and thermoloysis methods into a single electrolysis method. With the blend methods, a needle is again inserted into the follicle of an unwanted hair. However, both AC and DC currents are passed through the needle at the same time. This method works quickly and also has effective permanent hair removal results
A. The use of an invisible beam of light and a constant source of heat that penetrates the hair
follicle through its dark melanin, disabling and then destroying it at its root while preserving
the surrounding skin. Just think of it this way; colors attract light energy and hold it, while
light colors reflect light energy. It's like wearing a black tee shirt in the sunny summer
day! The light beam used in laser hair removal device is directed at the hair follicle. The
dark pigmented follicles absorb the laser light energy, die, and do not produce hair again.
On the other hand, light hair does not aborb the light energy.
A. Some electrologists will agree to work on you but the process will be very difficult. It will be
very difficult to see the roots of the hair. I would suggest you wax once every 2-3 months.
A. The average treatment ranges from 15-60 minutes. The amount of time per treatment
depends upon the reaction of the skin to treatment, and the client's sensitivity. Timing also
depends on what part of the body is being treated. However, the first treatment should not
last more than 15 minutes. Use this treatment as a test. If all goes well, the length of the
treatment should be agreed between the client and I.
A. That depends upon the client's sensitivity, tolerance, and the type of the hair, if terminal.
A. The sensation is less than tweezing for some people. Some clients relax enough to fall
asleep. It is impossible to destroy hair growth tissue without sensation because each hair
follicle is surrounded by its own network of nerve endings. The sensation, which may be
felt, is assurance that destructive activity is taking place. Even though some parts of the
body are more sensitive than others, adjustments of intensity can be made which helps to
make the treatment more tolerable.
A. The inner thigh and upper lip are usually the most sensitive. However, I apply a numbing
agent that should help with the sensation.
A. Not really! Immediately following treatment, there may be a slight redness and/or swelling
which usually disappears within a few hours. Occasionally, small whiteheads or tiny scabs
may occur. It is important to remember that scabs are a part of the normal healing process
in some people. If scabbing does occur, the client is advised to not pick them off. I am
using state-of-the-art technology and techniques, and the results are most satisfactory.

Q. Can I get an infection from the needle used in electrolysis?
A. I will use a new needle for each client and sanitize all instruments after each use.
Q. I have very coarse, dark facial hair and I work in the general public. Is it OK if I
tweeze before the appointment?
A. No! I will use several hair removal methods during one appointment. For instance, I will
first treat the course hair with electrloysis, and whatever is left will be waxed. I will do the
same method each time you visit until all hair is gone. It is VERY important that you do
not tweeze so that the treatment can be successful.
it take to eliminate and destroy my facial hair follicles?
A. Everyone is different. The average client has a few distorted hairs. All hairs in the very
early anagen stage have straight follicles and lie close to the surface of the skin. This is
the main reason why clients should keep their treatment on a close schedule.
Treating hair in the very early anagen stage is most advantageous because it assures no distortion to the follicle and destruction of these cells. It also requires less needle intensity and of course less, sensation level. Once the areas are completed, there is a less need for follow up treatments. Unless certain parts of the face experience new hair growth because of hormonal changes, the entire treatment generally spans 8-12 months with individual treatments once or twice a month. The number of treatments will be anywhere between 12-20.
Q. What should I use at home after the treatment?
A. Not much but I will discuss with you home care treatment during the appointment.
A. Yes, hormonal changes in a woman's body will have an effect on hair types and growth.
For some women, terminal hair begins to replace vellus hair on the face.
A. The decreased success rate of electrology is due to hair that is treated in the telogen
stage. The hair at this phase is already detached from the papilla. It is best to treat hair in
the anagen phase thus, it is very important for clients to maintain their appointment
schedule.

phase and regrowth will occur.
2- Distorted hair follicles that do not grow straight, but curl under the skin in such a way
that a straight needle cannot possibly reach the papilla. Distorted hair follicles occur
mostly in people with curly hair and sometimes become distorted and thickened from
constant shaving, tweezing, and waxing.

3- Irregular menstrual cycle, menopause, medications and other factors. Excessive
glandular secretions, hormonal imbalance, and high levels of androgen hormone which
increases the amount of hair and speed the hair cycle. It also causes new dormant
hairs / vellus hairs to become terminal and grow around surrounding follicles. Once a
hair follicle is destroyed it can no longer grow new hair. There can be anywhere from
500 to 1000 hair follicles per square inch, depending on the part of the body. So, you
may think that electrolysis is causing new hair growth but of course it is not!

If the hair is so damaged that it breaks during treatment, it will result in regrowth. However, I am very careful when the hairs are tweezed off preventing them from breaking.

However, most hair will grow from untreated hair follicles. If hair appears in about 6 weeks
or less, you can be sure that it is from a follicle that was previously dormant. A period of
7-8 weeks would be required for hair to grow from a treated follicle.
A. Ingrown hairs are blocked by skin over the follicle opening. Ingrown hairs are sometimes
caused by shaving, tweezing, or a bad waxing job. When hair breaks at the weakest point
just below the surface of the skin, this can distort the hair. The hair then grows under the
surface of the skin rather than up and out of the hair follicle. A pimple-like inflammation
results that is uncomfortable to the person especially when it occurs on the inner thigh, the
neck, bikini area, or the underarm.
Ingrown hair treatment;
Ingrown hair is treated by releasing the trapped end of the hair first and then treating it with electrolyisis current.
A. It depends! If the skin is inflamed or irritated you may not be able to undergo electrolysis.

A. No! That will be harmful. I can treat only the ones just outside the nose and ears.
